• Locate the file "NetLink Remote." This file is a network extension and should be placed in your extensions folder. If you drop this file onto the System Folder icon, the system will ask if you want it to put the file in the extensions folder. You should answer yes to this question. The file you are placing in the extensions folder looks like the icon below.
• Locate the file "NetLink Control." This is NOT an Control Panel ( it's an application ) and does not need to be placed in the Control Panels folder. You may want to create an alias to this file and place it in you Apple Menu for quick access, but you don't have to do this if you don't want to.
Note:
The file "NetLink Guide" should always be in the same folder as "NetLink Control." If it is not in the same folder, you will not be able to access the AppleGuide help file for NetLink.
• If you will be playing Marathon or Marathon 2, locate the file "Bogus Debug Init." This is an extension and should be placed in the extensions folder. If you drop this file on the System Folder, the system will ask if you want it to put the file in the extensions folder. You should answer yes to this question. The file you are placing in the extensions folder looks like the icon below.
Note:
If you have a real debugger like MacsBug, make sure you disable this extension before you do any debugging. Bogus Debug implements the _Debugger trap, and will prevent this trap from invoking your debugger.
Chapter 2 : Selecting NetLink as your connection method
Section 2.1: Using Classic AppleTalk Networking
• Open the Network Control Panel, which is located in the Control Panels folder.
• Select the NetLink Remote icon labled "NetLink" by clicking on it.
• Click the OK button when asked if you really want to switch networks.
• Close the Network Control Panel and you're done.
Section 2.2: Using Open Transport AppleTalk Networking
• First make sure File Sharing is off. You can check on this and turn it off with the Sharing Setup Control Panel. If it was on, restart your computer after disabling it. You will be able to turn it back on again after you select NetLink if desired.
• Open the AppleTalk Control Panel, which is located in the Control Panels folder.
• Use the pop-up menu labled "Connect Via:" to select NetLink.
• Close the AppleTalk Control Panel and click the Save button when asked if you want the changes to take effect. That's it.
• Locate the NetLink Control application and open it. It's icon is show below.
• If the status window shows the message "NetLink Not Available", as it does below, you will need to select NetLink as your network connection method before you can proceed. See Chapter 2.
• Select "NetLink Setup" from the NetLink Remote menu.
• You will then see the NetLink Setup Dialog displayed. A picture of it is displayed below.
Section 3.2: Setting up your modem
3.2.1: Setting the port to which your modem is attached
• Start by selecting the port your modem is connected to from the Port Pop-up menu. This list will show all serial devices, including internal and PC card modems.
3.2.2 Setting the DTE Speed
• Next you will want to select the DTE Speed. The DTE speed is the speed at which your computer and modem communicate with each other and needs only be equal to or greater than the speed at which you will be connecting at. Some modems do not support all of the DTE speeds that NetLink supports, actually many 14.4 modems do not support DTE 14.4. and many 28.8 modems don't support DTE 28.8. If you have one of these modems, you will need to select the next highest speed that your modem supports. Typically this is 19.2 Kbps or 38.4 Kbps respectively.
Notes:
1. Only Power Macs and the Quadra/Centris AV machines support DTE 115.2 Kbps and 230.4 Kbps. Even if your computer does support these speeds, you should use digression when using them, since they use more processing power and may not give any performance benefit if the attached device does not actually transfer data at these speed. For example, some 28.8 modems support 115.2 Kbps, but probably will never actually transmit data this fast.
2. Most machines with a 68K processor ( excluding the Quadra/Centris AV systems ) are not 100% reliable when then DTE speed is greater than 19.2 Kbps.
3. The most commonly supported DTE speeds are 57.6 Kbps, 38.4 Kbps, and 19.2 Kbps.
3.2.3 Setting the correct init string
• Next you should set the initialization string for your modem. First you should check to see if your modem's init string is one of the ones that comes with NetLink. You can select init strings from the init string pop-up menu.
Notes:
1. If this is the first time you will be connecting, use an init string that does NOT disable error correction or data compression. Some modems are picky about this and it's easier to connect if these options are not disabled. Disabling error correction can improve game performance, but you should try it with it on first if possible.
2. If you don't see your modem listed, select the generic modem option or try other settings that may be similar to your modem.
• You can create a custom init string if you like by typing it into the init string field. Just remember that local echo MUST be off after the init string is executed.
• Open the NetLink Setup Dialog. See Section 3.1 for instructions.
• Place a check in the "Answer Calls" check box
• Watch the status indicator. It should reach "Waiting for call..." if it does not, something is probably not configured properly. In this case, you will need to make some changes to the configuration. You don't have to turn of Answer Calls to make the changes ( except when you type in a custom init string ). Just change the settings until you find a setting that works.
Notes:
1. You can close the setup dialog, quit NetLink Setup, and run other software once you have turned on Answer Calls. NetLink will still be able to answer the phone, even if it's busy doing some other processor intensive actively.
Section 4.2: Dialing
• Open the NetLink Setup Dialog. See Section 3.1 for instructions.
• Make sure your modem has been setup properly
• Enter the number of someone who has set NetLink to answer the phone.
Notes:
1. You can add numbers to the Phone pop-up menu to the right of the phone field. This is useful if you have more than one person you will be calling. To do this, enter the phone number in the phone field, select the pop-up menu and choose "Add phone number..."
2. There is a list of NetLink Marathon players at http://www.amug.org/~marathon/netlink/ Find a person close to you and E-mail them a challenge if you don't know who to call.
• Click the connect button to have NetLink dial the phone number that you entered.
• You can also dial by just selecting Connect from the NetLink Remote menu. If you do this, make sure the correct phone number is already entered in the setup dialog.
